Subspecies
Red-billed Helmetshrike (Prionops caniceps) and Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike (Prionops rufiventris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Prionops caniceps following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Forms a superspecies, and often considered conspecific, with Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike (Prionops rufiventris).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
caniceps (Bonaparte, 1850) - South-western Mali (including Mandingues Mts), Guinea and Sierra Leone east to Ghana and southern Togo.
harterti (Neumann, 1908) - Benin, Nigeria and western Cameroon.
