Subspecies
Closely related to Plain-winged Antshrike (Thamnophilus schistaceus). Subspecies cayennensis possibly represents the extreme of a cline of plumage variation of nominate subspecies. Further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cayennensis Todd, 1927 - French Guiana and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (Amapá, northern Pará).
murinus Sclater & Salvin, 1867 - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), Guyana, Surinam, extreme east-central Colombia (eastern Guianía, eastern Vaupés) and Brazil north of R Amazon (from both banks of upper R Negro east to at least north-eastern Amazonas).
canipennis Todd, 1927 - Eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru (south to Ucayali and along base of Andes to north-western Madre de Dios), extreme south-eastern Colombia (Amazonas), western Brazil (east to R Japurá and, south of R Amazon, to R Madeira) and extreme northern Bolivia (eastern Pando).
