Subspecies
Closely related to Mouse-colored Antshrike (Thamnophilus murinus).

Proposed subspecies dubius (eastern Peru), which represents an intermediate plumage in a broad cline, and inornatus (central Brazil), which represents the end of a cline and intergrades broadly with nominate, are synonymized with nominate. Subspecies heterogynus may be specifically distinct.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • heterogynus (Hellmayr, 1907)   -  Extreme eastern Colombia (eastern Vaupés, presumably this race) and west-central Amazonian Brazil (lower R Japurá, middle R Jaú, and both banks of R Solimíµes from R Juruá and lower and middle R Purus east to R Madeira).
  • capitalis Sclater, PL, 1858   -  South-eastern Colombia (eastern base of Andes southern from Meta), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of R Marañón and R Amazon).
  • schistaceus d'Orbigny, 1835   -  East-central and south-eastern Peru (south of R Marañón and R Amazon), southern Amazonian Brazil (south of lower R Juruá and middle R Purus, and eastern from R Madeira to R Tocantins, south to Acre, Rondônia, northern and western Mato Grosso and southern Pará) and northern Bolivia (south to central Santa Cruz).
