Vagrant to Aruba, Barbados (E), Bermuda (P), Cayman Islands, Colombia, Jamaica, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua (P), Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Unknown to Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica (B), French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe (E) (B), Guyana, Honduras, Martinique (E) (B), Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Martin, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 5,000 (2011) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and hunting for food, predation by introduced mammals, are the main threats.

Habits
Primarily nocturnal and crepuscular.

Food
Fish, invertebrate swarms, fauna associated with Sargassum seaweed reefs, and squid.

Subspecies
Pterodroma hasitata (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Black-capped Petrel (Pterodroma hasitata) and Jamaican Petrel (Pterodroma caribbaea) following Brooke (2004).

May include Bermuda Petrel (Pterodroma cahow).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • hasitata (Kuhl, 1820)   -  Cuba and Hispaniola; Guadeloupe, Dominica (possibly extinct) and (?) Martinique.
  • caribbaea Carte, 1866   -  Jamaica. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Jamaican Petrel (Pterodroma caribbaea).


Similar Species
Bermuda Petrel (Pterodroma cahow) which is smaller and usually lacks white hindneck and rump, but separation may sometimes be impossible. Great Shearwater (Ardenna gravis) which is larger, darker and less contrasting above, lacks black edge to underwing and has slower wingbeats and less erratic flight.
