(Salvadori, 1899)

Range (Guide)
Cape Verde (B), Eastern Central Atlantic (B) (NB), Northeast Atlantic (NB), Portugal (B), Southwest Atlantic (NB), Spain (NB).

Vagrant to Ireland (NB), Israel, United Kingdom.

Cape Verde, Madeira, moving south in the non-breeding season.
 
Population
Estimated population is 3,000 (2010) and stable.

Voice
Various wailing, cackling, ululating and hiccuping calls at breeding grounds. Silent at sea.

Nest
At the end of a burrow excavated in soil at 80 - 300 m. Also in rocky crevices where there is little soil for a burrow.

Subspecies
Until recently, considered conspecific with Soft-plumaged Petrel (Pterodroma mollis) and Zino's Petrel (Pterodroma madeira). May be conspecific with Bermuda Petrel (Pterodroma cahow), and bird recently captured in Azores could represent link.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • feae (Salvadori, 1899)   -  Cape Verde Is; eastern Atlantic Ocean.
  • deserta Mathews, 1934   -  Desertas Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Desertas Petrel (Pterodroma deserta).


Similar Species
Zino's Petrel (Pterodroma madeira) is virtually identical but has a narrower, shorter bill and shorter wings.
