Subspecies
Kenyon's Shag (Phalacrocorax kenyoni), described by Siegel-Causey (1991), and previously treated as a species in Collar et al. (1994), is no longer recognised as distinct following Rohwer et al. (2000) who considered it indistinguishable from Pelagic Cormorant (Urile pelagicus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pelagicus Pallas, 1811 - North-west Pacific east to southern Alaska.
resplendens Audubon, 1838 - British Columbia to north-western Mexico.
