Nest
A small, flat, structure of sticks, lined with leaves, usually placed among the topmost branches of a tall tree.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 5, usually 2 or 3, laid at 2 - 4 day intervals; smooth, matt, white or blu-tinged, sparingly blotched with red-brown, dark brown or lavender; swollen-oval; about 46 x 37 mm. Incubation: begins with second egg, about 29 - 33 days; mainly by female.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 4 - 5 weeks.

Subspecies
Accipiter hiogaster has been split from Brown Goshawk (Accipiter fasciatus) by Christidis and Boles (2008), but BirdLife International treat as a subspecies of Brown Goshawk (Accipiter fasciatus) following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Subspecies natalis may belong to Grey Goshawk (Accipiter novaehollandiae) complex, or might even be separate species.

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • natalis (Lister, 1889)   -  Christmas I (Indian Ocean).
  • tjendanae Stresemann, 1925   -  Sumba (Lesser Sundas).
  • wallacii (Sharpe, 1874)   -  Lesser Sundas, from Lombok east to Babar.
  • stresemanni Rensch, 1931   -  Islets between Sulawesi and Lesser Sundas.
  • hellmayri Stresemann, 1922   -  Timor, Alor, Roti (Lesser Sundas).
  • savu Mayr, 1941   -  Sawu (Lesser Sundas).
  • polycryptus Rothschild & Hartert, 1915   -  Eastern New Guinea.
  • buruensis Stresemann, 1914   -  Buru (Moluccas).
  • dogwa Rand, 1941   -  Southern New Guinea.
  • didimus (Mathews, 1912)   -  Northern Australia; Buru (southern Moluccas).
  • fasciatus (Vigors & Horsfield, 1827)   -  Timor (Lesser Sundas); Australia and Tasmania; Rennell and Bellona Is (Solomons).
  • vigilax (Wetmore, 1926)   -  New Caledonia, Loyalty Is, Vanuatu.
  • rosselianus Mayr, 1940   -  Rossel Island, Lousiade Archaepeligo. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus).
