Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Viridian Metaltail (Metallura williami), Fire-throated Metaltail (Metallura eupogon), Coppery Metaltail (Metallura theresiae), Neblina Metaltail (Metallura odomae) and Violet-throated Metaltail (Metallura baroni). Subspecies malagae formerly considered to be distinct species, but in context of typical infraspecific variation within present genus morphological differences justify only subspecific separation.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
aeneocauda (Gould, 1846) - Eastern Andean slopes from south-eastern Peru (Cordillera Vilcabamba) to north-western Bolivia (Yungas of La Paz).
malagae von Berlepsch, 1897 - Incachaca in Yungas of Cochabamba (central Bolivia).
