Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest, high altitude grassland. From 2,900 - 4,000 m.
Peru.
Eastern slope of Andes in central Peru, from immediately south of R Huallaga in Huánuco to R Apurímac.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Scaled Metaltail (Metallura aeneocauda), Viridian Metaltail (Metallura williami), Coppery Metaltail (Metallura theresiae), Neblina Metaltail (Metallura odomae) and Violet-throated Metaltail (Metallura baroni). Sometimes considered to include Neblina Metaltail (Metallura odomae) and (in past) Violet-throated Metaltail (Metallura baroni) as subspecies, but differences in coloration, together with geographical separation, justify their treatment as separate species.
No subspecies.
