Streak-throated Hermit (Phaethornis rupurumii) [XC836535]
by Ricardo Gagliardi from Cant\u00e1, Roraima, Brazil (song, lek.)
Subspecies
Phaethornis squalidus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Dusky-throated Hermit (Phaethornis squalidus) and Streak-throated Hermit (Phaethornis rupurumii) following SACC (2005).
One of the small hermits sometimes separated in genus Pygmornis. Often considered conspecific with Dusky-throated Hermit (Phaethornis squalidus), but morphological characters indicate it is more closely related to Little Hermit (Phaethornis longuemareus) and Minute Hermit (Phaethornis idaliae). Future studies may reveal that geographically isolated subspecies amazonicus should be considered a full species. A hybrid with Little Hermit (Phaethornis longuemareus) was described as "Phaethornis longuemareus imatacae" and another with subspecies ruber of Reddish Hermit (Phaethornis ruber) as "Phaethornis longuemareus aethopyga".
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rupurumii Boucard, 1892 - Extreme eastern Colombia (eastern Vichada) through central and eastern Venezuela and western Guyana to adjacent northern Brazil.
amazonicus Hellmayr, 1906 - Along lower R Amazon in north-central Brazil.
