Subspecies
Closest to Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus borealis), Strickland's Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus stricklandi) and Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus). Subspecies rather poorly differentiated, with variation possibly clinal.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

albolarvatus (Cassin, 1850) - South-central British Columbia south, discontinuously in mountains, to Washington, western Idaho, Oregon, California (southern in Coast Ranges to north-western Colusa, and along Sierra Nevada in east), and extreme western Nevada.
gravirostris (Grinnell, 1902) - South-western California (mountains around Los Angeles and San Diego).
