Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation due to conversion to agriculture, construction of roads, reservoirs, housing estates, are the mian threats.

Subspecies
Centrocercus urophasianus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison Grouse (Centrocercus minimus) following AOU (1998).
Considered by some authors as conspecific with Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Allopatric Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is much (30%) larger.
