Red-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus erythropus) [XC221844]

Subspecies
Crypturellus erythropus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was previously split into Red-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus erythropus), Crypturellus columbianus and Crypturellus saltuarius following Stotz et al. (1996), who also split Crypturellus idoneus, but all these taxa are lumped into Red-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus erythropus) following SACC (2006).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-capped Tinamou (Crypturellus atrocapillus) or Yellow-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus noctivagus).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • columbianus (Salvadori, 1895)   -  North-central Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Colombian Tinamou (Crypturellus columbianus).
  • saltuarius Wetmore, 1950   -  Magdalena Valley, north-central Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Magdalena Tinamou (Crypturellus saltuarius).
  • idoneus (Todd, 1919)   -  North-eastern Colombia, north-western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Santa Marta Tinamou (Crypturellus idoneus).
  • cursitans Wetmore & Phelps Jr, 1956   -  Northern Colombia, north-western Venezuela.
  • spencei (Brabourne & Chubb, C, 1914)   -  Northern Venezuela.
  • margaritae Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1948   -  Margarita I (Venezuela).
  • erythropus (Pelzeln, 1863)   -  Eastern Venezuela to north-eastern Brazil.
