Vagrant to Cuba.
Breeds patchily in south-western USA from southern Idaho and Wyoming south to Arizona, New Mexico and south-eastern Texas. Migrates to western and southern Mexico (from northern Jalisco and Guanajuato, occasionally from Nayarit, south to southern Oaxaca).

Estimated population is 400,000 (2010).

Forms a superspecies with Nashville Warbler (Leiothlypis ruficapilla), sometimes with Colima Warbler (Leiothlypis crissalis) also included and all have been considered conspecific, but such an arrangement not generally accepted.
