Subspecies
Cutia nipalensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Himalayan, Cutia (Cutia nipalensis) and Vietnamese Cutia (Cutia legalleni) following Collar (2006).
Formerly treated as conspecific with Vietnamese Cutia (Cutia legalleni).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
nipalensis Hodgson, 1837 - Eastern Uttaranchal Pradesh east to Bhutan and north-eastern Indian hill states (except Meghalaya), north-western and northern Myanmar and southern China (adjacent south-eastern Xizang, extreme north-western Yunnan, possibly extending to south-western Sichuan).
melanchima Deignan, 1947 - Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar, southern China (western and southern Yunnan), north-western Thailand, northern and central Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
