Proposed subspecies imprudens (from hills of Assam northern and east of R Brahmaputra) is indistinguishable from nigrimentum.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
erythrocephalum (Vigors, 1832) - Western Himachal Pradesh east to Uttaranchal Pradesh, in northern India.
kali (Vaurie, 1953) - Western and central Nepal.
nigrimentum Oates, 1889 - Eastern Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, northern Assam) and adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
