First Described (Guide)
(Bryant, 1859)

Habitat
Locally in towns and around human habitation, feeds in open areas such as clearings in woodland, marshes, fields and along coastlines.

Range (Guide)
Bahamas (B), Cuba (NB), USA (NB).

Northern Bahamas (islands of Grand Bahama, Great Abaco and Andros, possibly also New Providence); in non-breeding season south to eastern Cuba.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat loss and competition for nest-sites with introduced cavity-nesters such as House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) and Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) are the main threats.

Nest
In natural cavities and old woodpecker holes in pine Pinus caribaea woodlands.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Has sometimes been placed in a separate genus Callichelidon. DNA studies, however, indicate close relationship with Violet-green Swallow (Tachycineta thalassina) and Golden Swallow (Tachycineta euchrysea).

Similar Species
Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) which is more metallic with darker, blackish wings and less forked tail, juvenile Bahama Swallow (Tachycineta cyaneoviridis) which is greyer on back and head with less brown on breast than Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor).
