Subspecies
Molecular data suggest an isolated position for this species, but in external morphology it seems closer to Bolivian Blackbird (Oreopsar bolivianus) and Austral Blackbird (Curaeus curaeus). In nesting behaviour and voice it resembles Bay-winged Cowbird (Agelaioides badius). Subspecies megistus sometimes subsumed in sulcirostris. Latter apparently intergrades with nominate in eastern Brazil (northern Minas Gerais, possibly also Goiás).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
sulcirostris (von Spix, 1824) - North-eastern Brazil eastern from Maranhío and Ceará and south to Bahia and northern Minas Gerais (possibly also northern Goiás).
chopi (Vieillot, 1819) - Central and eastern Brazil (central Mato Grosso east to Goiás, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo) south to north-eastern Argentina (south to Santa Fe and Entre Ríos) and Uruguay.
megistus (Leverkühn, 1889) - Extreme south-eastern Peru (Pampas de Heath and Madre de Dios) east to eastern Bolivia (La Paz, Beni and Santa Cruz).
