by GABRIEL LEITE from Madre de Dios, CICRA-Los Amigos Research Station, Peru (call)

Subspecies
Phlegopsis nigromaculata (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Phlegopsis nigromaculata and Phlegopsis paraensis by Ridgely and Tudor (1994) but this treatment is not adopted following SACC (2005) and a review by the BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group. Phlegopsis barringeri (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is considered a hybrid between Reddish-winged Bare-eye (Phlegopsis erythroptera) and Black-spotted Bare-eye (Phlegopsis nigromaculata) following SACC (2005).

May prove to be a member of an obligate ant-following clade. Occasionally interbreeds with Reddish-winged Bare-eye (Phlegopsis erythroptera). Form described as Phlegopsis barringeri ("Argus Bare-eye") (Argus Bare-eye (Phlegopsis barringeri)) shown to be a hybrid between the two. Southern populations (Rondônia and Mato Grosso south to north-eastern Bolivia) tentatively included in subspecies bowmani, but may represent an undescribed subspecies. Taxonomic study needed.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigromaculata (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  South-central Colombia (Meta southern along eastern base of Andes to Putumayo and extreme southern Amazonas), north-eastern Ecuador (north of R Napo), eastern Peru (except western Loreto), south-western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Madeira) and north-eastern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Beni, Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz).
  • bowmani Ridgway, 1888   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (R Madeira east to R Xingu, south to Rondônia and western and northern Mato Grosso) and north-eastern Bolivia (northern Santa Cruz).
  • confinis Zimmer, JT, 1932   -  R Xingu east to R Tocantins and R Araguaia.
  • paraensis Hellmayr, 1904   -  Eastern Brazil (southern Amapá, western Marajó I and, south of R Amazon, eastern from R Tocantins to western Maranhío). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-spotted Bare-eye (Phlegopsis paraensis).
