Subspecies
Hydridization has apparently occured with Green-cheeked Parakeet (Pyrrhura molinae), indicating these forms possibly conspecific. It has been questioned whether subspecies sandiae is valid.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rupicola (Tschudi, 1844) - Central Peru.
sandiae Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1944 - South-eastern Peru, extreme western Brazil and northern Bolivia.
