Subspecies
Some of subspecies listed may repesent clinal variation. Population in valley of R Machariapo, Bolivia, lacking red belly patch, may be a separate subspecies unless flocks of immatures form. Population of western Brazil formerly known as Pyrrhura hypoxantha (Yellow-sided Parakeet), but now judged to be xanthistic birds of nominate subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • phoenicura (Schlegel, 1864)   -  North-eastern Bolivia and western Brazil.
  • molinae (Massena & Souancé, 1854)   -  Highland eastern Bolivia.
  • restricta Todd, 1947   -  Lowland eastern Bolivia.
  • sordida Todd, 1947   -  Extreme eastern Bolivia and south-western Brazil.
  • australis Todd, 1915   -  Southern Bolivia to north-western Argentina.
  • flavoptera Maijer, Herzog, Kessler, Friggens & Fjeldså, 1998   -  Western Bolivia (intermontane valleys in La Paz and Cochabamba).
  • hypoxantha Salvadori, 1899   -  Extreme eastern Bolivia and south-western Brazil (southern Mato Grosso). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-sided Parakeet (Pyrrhura hypoxantha).
