Usually in pairs, but occasionally in small parties of from 3 to 5.

Food
Grasshoppers and other large insects, and lizards.

Voice
A high-pitched, short 'pit-wee', the second note descending.

Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Pacific Baza (Aviceda subcristata), African Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda cuculoides) and Madagascar Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda madagascariensis). Pacific Baza (Aviceda subcristata), Jerdon's Baza (Aviceda jerdoni), African Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda cuculoides) and Madagascar Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda madagascariensis) sometimes considered conspecific.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

ceylonensis (Legge, 1876) - South-western India and Sri Lanka.
jerdoni (Blyth, 1842) - North-eastern India through Burma, southern China (south-western Yunnan, Hainan), Thailand and parts of Indochina to northern Malay Peninsula; some movement southern for winter.
borneensis (Br�ggemann, 1876) - Borneo.
magnirostris (Kaup, 1847) - Philippines.
celebensis (Schlegel, 1873) - Sulawesi, Banggai Is and Sula Is.
