Genus, as currently delimited, is probably polyphyletic. Molecular studies suggest that present species is in a clade with Seaside Sparrow (Ammospiza maritima), Nelson's Sparrow (Ammospiza nelsoni) and Le Conte's Sparrow (Ammospiza leconteii). Until recently considered conspecific with Nelson's Sparrow (Ammospiza nelsoni), but differs in its natural history. The two hybridize in north-eastern USA (southern Maine and northern Massachusetts). Precise ranges of the two on Atlantic coast not fully known, as references to "Sharp-tailed Sparrow" not always clear. Subspecies poorly differentiated, and probably indistinguishable in the field. The original description of diversus was based on material from south of species' breeding range.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• caudacutus (Gmelin, JF, 1788)   -  Breeds north-eastern USA from southern Maine southern along coast to New Jersey. Non-breeding mainly from New Jersey south to northern and western Florida.
• diversus Bishop, 1901   -  Breeds from coastal New Jersey south to Delmarva Peninsula. Non-breeding probably from breeding range south to north-eastern Florida, and casually to Louisiana.
