Habitat
Montane forest, gallery forest, their edges and secondary growth. From 1,600 - 3,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Burundi (B), Congo [The Democratic Republic of the] (B), Kenya (B), Rwanda (B), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B), Uganda (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
In pairs or small family parties, occasionally of 6 - 8.

Food
Insects and spiders.

Voice
An often repeated 'dzzee dzzee', sometimes run together in a trill. A higher pitched 'tsee tseee', noted in Tanzania.

Subspecies
Chestnut-throated Apalis (Apalis porphyrolaema) and Kabobo Apalis (Apalis kaboboensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are now lumped into Apalis porphyrolaema following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Forms a superspecies with Kabobo Apalis (Apalis kaboboensis) and Chapin's Apalis (Apalis chapini) and all sometimes treated as conspecific.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • porphyrolaema Reichenow & Neumann, 1895   -  Eastern DRCongo, western Rwanda, north-western Burundi, eastern Uganda, Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • affinis Ogilvie-Grant, 1906   -  South-western Uganda.
  • kaboboensis Prigogine, 1955   -  DR Congo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kabobo Apalis (Apalis kaboboensis).
