First Described (Guide)
Ticehurst, 1937

Habitat
Mediterranean-type shrubland. Also, subtropical and tropical dry forest. From sea-level - 4,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Algeria (B) (NB), Burkina Faso (NB), France (B) (NB), Ghana (NB), Gibraltar (NB), Mali, Morocco (B) (NB), Portugal (B) (NB), Senegal (NB), Spain (B) (NB), Tunisia (B) (NB).

Vagrant to Denmark, Netherlands Antilles, United Kingdom.

Unknown to Gambia.

Breeds in south-western France, north-west, central and southern Spain and Portugal, and discontinuously in northern Morocco, northern Algeria and north-western Tunisia; non-breeding range not well known, includes north-western Africa (principally Tunisia), but main area appears to be farther south, in tropical western Africa (from Senegal east to southern Mali, Burkina Faso and northern Ghana).
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,100,000 - 1,600,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Phylloscopus collybita (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), Canary Islands Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus canariensis), Iberian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus ibericus) and Mountain Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus sindianus) following AERC TAC (2003) (see Sangster et al. 2002).

Mountain Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus sindianus) now includes Caucasian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus lorenzii) previously treated as distinct by Sibley and Monroe (1993).

Forms a superspecies with, and until recently treated as conspecific with, Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and Canary Islands Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus canariensis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • biscayensis Salomon, Voisin & Bried, 2003   -  Northern Portugal and northern Spain to extreme France Basque country.
  • ibericus Ticehurst, 1937   -  South-western France, Portugal, Spain, north-western Africa.
