Subspecies
Phylloscopus inornatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Inornate Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus) and Buff-browed Warbler (Phylloscopus humei) following AERC TAC (2003) (see Sangster et al. 2002).
Subspecies mandellii sometimes treated as a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
humei (Brooks, 1878) - Breeds south-central Russia (Altai, Sayan and southern Baikal Ranges), western Mongolia, north-eastern and eastern Kazakhstan, north-western China (Junggar Basin) and Tien Shan south to north-eastern Afghanistan and Kashmir, thence east to central Nepal. Non-breeding north-eastern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and northern and eastern India east to Bangladesh and extreme southern China (southern Xizang).
mandellii (Brooks, WE, 1879) - Breeds central China (eastern Qinghai east to Shaanxi, south to northern Yunnan). Non-breeding southern China (south-eastern Xizang) and north-eastern India east to Bangladesh east to western and north-western Myanmar, north-western Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
