Habitat
Deciduous woodland, evergreen broadleaf forest, forest edge, secondary growth (including bamboo), wooded stands in coffee and tea estates and wooded gardens. From sea-level - 1,200 m (1,800 m in Sri Lanka).

Subspecies
Chloropsis aurifrons (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Golden-fronted Leafbird (Chloropsis aurifrons) and Sumatran Leafbird (Chloropsis media) following Wells et al. (2003).
Forms a superspecies with Sumatran Leafbird (Chloropsis media) and was for long considered conspecific, but differs in several respects, including in development of mask.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
aurifrons (Temminck, 1829) - North-eastern Indian Subcontinent (eastern in Himalayan foothills from Himachal Pradesh, south to Orissa) and north, western and central Myanmar.
frontalis (Pelzeln, 1856) - Western and eastern India (southern from southern Gujarat and the Satpura Range and, in east, from central Orissa).
insularis Whistler & Kinnear, 1932 - Far south-western India and Sri Lanka.
pridii Deignan, 1946 - Southern China (south-western Yunnan), eastern and southern Myanmar, north-western and western Thailand and northern and central Laos.
inornata Kloss, 1918 - East-central and eastern Thailand, southern Laos and central Vietnam.
incompta Deignan, 1948 - South-western and south-eastern Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
