Habitat
Pelagic. Subantarctic grassland, sea-cliffs, rocky offshore islands.

Australia (NB), Namibia (NB), New Zealand (B), South Africa (NB), Southeast Atlantic (NB), Western Indian Ocean (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 499,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Longline fishing, interference from introduced pigs and feral cats are the main threas.

Food
Fish, cephalopods, crustaceans, tunicates, offal. Generally a surface feeder, but may undertake shallow surface dives.

Nest
In colonies.

Subspecies
Diomedea cauta (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into cauta, eremita and salvini following Brooke (2004) and steadi following ACAP (2006) and all placed in the genus Thalassarche (Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta), Chatham Albatross (Thalassarche eremita), Salvin's Albatross (Thalassarche salvini), White-capped Albatross (Thalassarche steadi)).

Thalassarche cauta has been split into Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) and White-capped Albatross (Thalassarche steadi) following Robertson and Nunn (1998), ACAP (2006).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Slightly smaller Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) which has a darker face and more yellow on the culmen of the bill, Salvin's Albatross (Thalassarche salvini) and Chatham Albatross (Thalassarche eremita) have darker grey heads and lack the white cap.
