Subspecies
Cliff Flycatcher (Hirundinea ferruginea) and Swallow Flycatcher (Hirundinea bellicosa) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Hirundinea ferruginea following SACC (2005).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
sclateri Reinhardt, 1870 - Western Venezuela and southern on eastern slope of eastern Andes from Colombia to south-eastern Peru (south to Cuzco).
ferruginea (Gmelin, 1788) - Disjunctly in extreme eastern Colombia (R Vaupes), north-western Brazil (north-western Amazonas), south-eastern Venezuela (Bolívar), south-western Guyana and French Guiana.
pallidior Hartert & Goodson, 1917 - Northern and eastern Bolivia, western Paraguay and north-western Argentina (south to La Rioja and Córdoba).
bellicosa (Vieillot, 1819) - Southern and eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and Uruguay. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Swallow Flycatcher (Hirundinea bellicosa).
