Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, heavily degraded former forest. From 800 - 3,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama.

Cordillera Central and extreme northern Cordillera de Talamanca (central Costa Rica).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Lampornis castaneoventris (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis castaneoventris) and Purple-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis calolaemus) following AOU (1998).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis castaneoventris).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • pectoralis (Salvin, 1891)   -  Extreme southern Nicaragua to north-central Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis castaneoventris).
  • calolaemus (Salvin, 1865)   -  Southern Nicaragua to western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis castaneoventris).
  • homogenes Wetmore, 1967   -  Pacific slope of southern Costa Rica (probably) and western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis castaneoventris).
