Estimated population is 910 (2010) and increasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss and predation by introduced cats, dogs, mustelids and possums and the native Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) are the main threats.

Voice
Male utters soft, high-pitched wheezy whistles and popping, Female utters low quacks and growls.

Subspecies
Anas aucklandica (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica), Brown Teal (Anas chlorotis) and Campbell Teal (Anas nesiotis) following Daugherty et al. (1999).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Grey Teal (Anas gracilis) and Chestnut Teal (Anas castanea) have white triangle in front of speculum when in flight, no white eye-ring.
