Carp's Tit © oiseaux.net

Parus niger (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is split by Clancey (1995) into Black Tit (Melaniparus niger) and Carp's Tit (Melaniparus carpi) based on reported morphological characters. However, while carpi is smaller than niger and displays darker underparts the BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group felt that differences were slight and supported recognition of carpi only at the subspecific level.

Forms a superspecies with White-winged Tit (Melaniparus leucomelas), Black Tit (Melaniparus niger), Pale-eyed Black Tit (Melaniparus guineensis) and White-bellied Tit (Melaniparus albiventris), possibly also including White-backed Black Tit (Melaniparus leuconotus). Has been considered conspecific with White-winged Tit (Melaniparus leucomelas) and Black Tit (Melaniparus niger). Further research required.

Considered by some authors as a subspecies of Black Tit (Melaniparus niger).
