Estimated population is 48 - 100 (2010) and increasing.
Status EN
Accidental reintroduction of rats, severe weather events and the introduction of avian disease remain possible threats. Southern Skua (Catharacta lonnbergi), Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus), and Northern Giant Petrel (Macronectes halli) are potential natural predators.

Habits
Flightless.
Food
In captivity it feeds on amphipods, weevils, earthworms, seaweed and other insects. In the wild invertebrates also.
Voice
Soft, high-pitched wheezy whistles and popping (male). Low quacks and growls (female).

Nest
1 - 4. In captivity sometime two clutches.
Subspecies
Anas aucklandica (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica), Brown Teal (Anas chlorotis) and Campbell Teal (Anas nesiotis) following Daugherty et al. (1999).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica).
