Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pink-throated Twinspot (Hypargos margaritatus). Subspecies differ minimally.

Proposed subspecies idius (described from R Kihambwe, c. 29 km north of Kibondo, in north-western Tanzania) and interior (from Sanyati I, on L Kariba, in north-western Zimbabwe) are treated as synonyms of macrospilotus, as also is baddeleyi (described from Nacala, in north-eastern Mozambique).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • macrospilotus Mearns, 1913   -  North-eastern Angola, south-eastern DRCongo, Rwanda, Burundi, south-eastern Kenya and southern Somalia south to northern Zimbabwe and northern and central Mozambique (to south of R Zambezi).
  • niveoguttatus (Peters, 1868)   -  Eastern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique.
