Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Hypargos, but more closely related to Cryptospiza.

Proposed subspecies virginiae (described from R Opu, on Bioko I) treated as a synonym of schlegeli.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • schlegeli (Sharpe, 1870)   -  Western Guinea and Sierra Leone east, discontinuously, to DRCongo and western Uganda, south to north-western Angola. Also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
  • chubbi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1912)   -  Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania (including Pemba I), Zanzibar, Zambia and northern Malawi.
  • nitidula (Hartlaub, 1865)   -  Southern Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, eastern South Africa (Limpopo Province, KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Eastern Cape) and western Swaziland.
  • virginiae (Amadon, 1953)   -  Bioko (Gulf of Guinea).
