Subspecies
May form a clade with Short-tailed Pipit (Anthus brachyurus) and Sokoke Pipit (Anthus sokokensis). Extent of distribution uncertain, and geographical variation and limits of subspecies poorly understood. Birds from Angola included with mzimbaensis but smaller and less pale below, almost certainly involve an undescribed subspecies. In addition, birds from extreme south-eastern DRCongo and adjacent Zambia and northern Malawi may represent an undescribed subspecies. Further study is required.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • australoabyssinicus Benson, 1942   -  Southern Ethiopia (highlands east of Rift Valley).
  • blayneyi van Someren, 1919   -  Southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • mzimbaensis Benson, 1955   -  Angola (Cuanza Norte and Bié south to northern Huíla, east to northern Moxico), north-western Malawi, extreme south-eastern DRCongo and Zambia south to north-eastern Botswana and central Zimbabwe.
  • caffer Sundevall, 1851   -  South-eastern Botswana, south-western Zimbabwe, north-eastern South Africa and western Swaziland.
  • traylori Clancey, 1964   -  Lowlands in north-eastern South Africa (eastern northern Province, north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal), eastern Swaziland and extreme southern Mozambique (south of R Limpopo).
