Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with White-breasted Sunbird (Cinnyris talatala) and both have sometimes been considered to be part of a superspecies that also includes Orange-tufted Sunbird (Cinnyris bouvieri), Palestine Sunbird (Cinnyris osea) and Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

oustaleti (Barboza du Bocage, 1878) - West-central Angola.
rhodesiae Benson, 1955 - North-eastern Zambia and western and south-western Tanzania.
