Relationships uncertain. Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Ashy-crowned Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix griseus), but range is largely parapatric with that of Chestnut-headed Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix signatus). Has also been considered to form a superspecies with Chestnut-headed Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix signatus), Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix nigriceps) and Grey-backed Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix verticalis). Plumage varies clinally, on average darker in south, but insufficient to warrant naming of geographical subspecies.
