Subspecies
Bears close resemblance to Rufous-naped Lark (Mirafra africana), but probably most closely related to the "Clapper Lark (Mirafra apiata) complex". Subspecies poorly differentiated and further research may lead to one or more being subsumed. Racial affiliation of birds recently observed in south-western Tanzania uncertain, tentatively placed in marungensis. Described subspecies minyanyae (from north-western Zambia) synonymized with antonii. Birds from southern part of Angola (Cuando Cubango) described as subspecies niethammeri, but possibly referable to Eastern Clapper Lark (Mirafra fasciolata).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
angolensis Barboza du Bocage, 1880 - Western and central Angola.
