Habitat
Forest edge and large canopy gaps. Also submontane and montane forest, chiefly in open forest edge-type habitat with a high density of vines and climbers, such as clearings and drainage lines, glades on the edge of, or deep inside forest.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
moreaui (Sclater, 1931) - Eastern Usambara Mts, in north-eastern Tanzania.
sousae (Benson, 1945) - Njesi Plateau, in northern Mozambique. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mozambique Forest-warbler (Artisornis sousae).
Similar Species
Red-capped Forest-warbler (Artisornis metopias) which has much shorter bill and more extensive russet wash on face and breast.
