Habitat
Bamboo, areas of high grass and dense cover both in and outside forest and in forest edge, riverine marshland, Combretum/Terminalia savanna, crops, and mixed deciduous woodland, grassy secondary growth and moist evergreen forest. From 525 - 2,300 m.

Subspecies
Has been allied with Knysna Warbler (Bradypterus sylvaticus) on basis of its shortish rounded tail, but such a relationship generally not accepted. The two have totally different songs.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
alfredi Hartlaub, 1890 - Western Ethiopia (Didessa, Bulchra Forest, Gambela), south-eastern Sudan (Gilo, in Imatong Mts), eastern DRCongo (southern Lendu Plateau and Ruwenzoris south to highlands Nwest of Baraka) and western Uganda (Bugoma Forest, Mubuku Valley).
kungwensis (Moreau, 1942) - Western Tanzania ( Mt Kungwe, Mt Mahare), south-eastern DRCongo (Lwiru and Dipidi, in Upemba National Park) and north-western Zambia (north-western Mwinilunga).
