Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Niger.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Often placed in genus Prinia.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythropterus (Jardine, 1849)   -  Senegal to southern Mali and northern Cameroon.
  • jodopterus (Heuglin, 1864)   -  Cameroon, Central African Republic, northern DRCongo, southern Sudan and north-western Uganda.
  • major (Blundell & Lovat, 1899)   -  Western Ethiopia.
  • rhodopterus (Shelley, 1880)   -  South-western Kenya, eastern Tanzania, eastern Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe.
