Proposed subspecies tenebricosus (southern Mozambique) synonymized with isabellinus.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

• brachypterus (Sharpe, 1870)   -  Senegal east to western Sudan, south to northern Angola (Cabinda) and northern DRCongo.
• hypoxanthus Hartlaub, 1881   -  North-eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan and northern Uganda.
• zedlitzi Reichenow, 1909   -  Eritrea and Ethiopian Highlands.
• katonae Madarász, 1904   -  Central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
• kericho Lynes, 1930   -  South-western Kenya.
• reichenowi Mearns, 1911   -  Southern Somalia, coastal Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.
• ankole Lynes, 1930   -  Eastern DRCongo and southern Uganda south to north-western Tanzania.
• isabellinus Reichenow, 1907   -  Central Tanzania and southern and eastern Zambia south to Mozambique.
• loanda Lynes, 1930   -  Angola, southern DRCongo and northern Zambia.
