Subspecies
Proposed subspecies togoensis (eastern Ghana and Togo) considered not satisfactorily distinguishable from leucurus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

leucurus (Cassin, 1855) - Western Guinea east to Togo.
indicator (Verreaux & Verreaux, 1855) - South-western and central Nigeria (including isolated population on Jos Plateau) east to extreme southern Sudan and western Kenya, south to northern Angola, southern DRCongo and extreme north-western Zambia.
