Forms a superspecies with Somali Tit (Melaniparus thruppi), Ashy Tit (Melaniparus cinerascens) and Grey Tit (Melaniparus afer). Has been considered conspecific with Somali Tit (Melaniparus thruppi).

Paler birds from Zambia described as subspecies lundarum, and birds from Mozambique and Zimbabwe with more prominent nuchal spot as parvirostris.
