Voice
A harsh 'zzeee' uttered in alarm. A whistled 'seeeup' uttered in contact. A musical song of whistles and chirps, more varied than those of Karoo Scrub-Robin (Tychaedon coryphoeus) or Red-backed Scrub-Robin (Cercotrichas leucophrys).

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Cercotrichas. Geographical variation clinal, palest in north-western and darkest in east.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

benguellensis (Hartert, 1907) - South-western Angola.
damarensis Hartert, 1907 - Namibia.
paena (Smith, 1836) - Botswana and north-central South Africa (Northern Cape).
oriens (Clancey, 1957) - Southern Zimbabwe and northern South Africa (Northern Province, Free State).
