Habitat
Subtropical andtropical lowland and montane moist forest. From 1,600 - 4,300 m.

Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
Subspecific taxonomy complex; one group of subspecies (including intensa, ruwenzorii, guttifer, orientalis and nominate) has simple piping call, and another (including macarthuri, helleri and transvaalensis) has complex piping call, but these groups not separated in simple geographical pattern; also, subadult plumage (unique among African robins) varies depending on subspecies. Other described subspecies are friedmanni, synonymized with ruwenzorii; lebombo (Lebombo Mts, on Zululand-Swaziland border), synonymized with transvaalensis; and margaritata (described from Pietermaritzburg, in eastern South Africa), synonymized with nominate.

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallidiflava Cunningham-van Someren & Schifter, 1981   -  Imatong Mts, in southern Sudan.
  • ruwenzorii (Ogilvie-Grant, 1906)   -  North-eastern DRCongo, south-western Uganda, western Rwanda and western Burundi.
  • elgonensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1911)   -  Mt Elgon, on Uganda-Kenya border.
  • intensa Sharpe, 1901   -  Northern and central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • macarthuri van Someren, 1939   -  Chyulu Hills, in south-eastern Kenya.
  • helleri Mearns, 1913   -  Taita Hills (south-eastern Kenya) and north-eastern Tanzania.
  • guttifer (Reichenow & Neumann, 1895)   -  Mt Kilimanjaro, in northern Tanzania.
  • orientalis (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884)   -  Western, eastern, and southern Tanzania south to Malawi and Mozambique.
  • hygrica Clancey, 1969   -  Western Mozambique.
  • chirindensis (Roberts, 1914)   -  Eastern Zimbabwe.
  • transvaalensis (Roberts, 1912)   -  Northern South Africa (former Transvaal).
  • stellata (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Eastern and southern South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, eastern Cape and western Cape) and Swaziland.
