Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia.

Vagrant to Mali.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Genus sometimes treated as a subgenus of Bias. Proposed subspecies carolathi (from Angola) considered synonymous with aequatorialis.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • flammulatus (Verreaux & Verreaux, 1855)   -  Forests from Gambia (one record) and Guinea east, including Bioko I (Fernando Póo), to western DRCongo.
  • aequatorialis Jackson, 1904   -  Forests of central DRCongo, northern Angola and Uganda, and very locally southern Sudan (Bengengai), north-western Tanzania (Minziro Forest), western Kenya (Kakamega and Nandi Forests); disjunctly southern DRCongo (Kasaji, in Katanga) and neighbouring north-western Zambia (Mwinilunga district).
