Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 350 - 2,700 m.

Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Trochocercus, but recent evidence indicates closer relationship with present genus. Forms a superspecies with Dusky Crested-flycatcher (Elminia nigromitrata) and White-bellied Crested-flycatcher (Elminia albiventris).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • albonotata Sharpe, 1891   -  Mt Elgon east to central Kenya, and western Uganda south through Rift Valley to eastern DRCongo and south-western Tanzania.
  • subcaerulea (Grote, 1923)   -  South-eastern Kenya, east, central and southern Tanzania, southern Malawi and northern Mozambique.
  • swynnertoni (Neumann, 1908)   -  Eastern Zimbabwe (Nyanga to Mt Selinda) and Mozambique (R Pungwe south to about Espungabera and east to Mt Gorongosa).
