Habitat
Open dry savannas, grasslands, swamps, riverbanks, lake shores and receding pools where fish are concentrated2. Typically forages in and around fishing villages.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Israel, Liberia, Spain.

Tropical Africa.
 
Population
Estimated population is 200,000 - 500,000 (2010).

Nest
A structure composed of sticks, located in trees, on cliffs or on buildings in towns and villages, about 10 - 30 m above the ground. In colonies of single or mixed-species groups.

Subspecies
Formerly included in Greater Adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius), with which forms superspecies.

No subspecies.
